Accommodation around Birkbeck

General Notes:

  • The summer school will take place at Birkbeck College, University of London
  • We are not able to offer accommodation
  • The summer school takes place at a busy time of the year in London, and we are not able to offer any discounts to conference participants.
  • Once accepted onto the course, please book early to avoid disappointment, especially at the University accommodation.
  • There are literally hundreds of hotels in central London, and many dozens within a short walk of Birkbeck (nearest tube stops: Russell Square; Euston; Goodge Street; Warren Street).
  • Please note that a 'single' room in London generally means a single bed, except in the larger chain hotels (e.g. Holiday Inn, Novotel etc).
  • All prices are subject to change without notification.
  • Please contact the hotel for up-to-date quotes; best prices are usually obtained from the hotels’ own websites, but you could also check Expedia and Travelocity.
  • All bookings and queries are to be made directly with the hotels - this is simply a list of names and addresses. The BIH has not checked out the properties for quality or value.

Recommendations from Previous Years Students (these cannot be guaranteed – they are simply a guide)

Studios 92 - “It was a basic flat share with 4 other people with wifi and a shared kitchen, bathroom.”

London Serviced Aparthotels – “I stayed in the little hotel ( London Serviced Aparthotel) in Tottenham Street near Charlotte Street - 5 or 6 blocks to Birkbeck - £65 a day. It had a little room with a bed and a table/chair, but it had Internet connexion. The bathroom was common to 4 rooms. It had a common kitchen where you can to prepare your food. There is a washing machine too. The address by Internet is: london@flexistay.net, and the telephone number is: +447826907766.

Premier Inn in Euston - “I had stayed two different accommodations in two weeks, because I failed to book a more economical accommodation. In the first week, I stayed Premier Inn in Euston. This hotel was nice with a clean and comfortable room. The hotel was close to Birkbeck: it took 10 minutes on foot. However, the price was not so cheap. It depended on the date: the cheapest price was £88 while the highest was £170. The average price was £135 per night (not including breakfast). In the second week, fortunately, I was able to get a student dorm of UCL, Frances Gardner House. The price was £43.5 (en-suite) per night. The room was wide and clean. I was able to use a common kitchen and laundry. There was a small park just behind it and atmosphere surrounding the dorm was quiet and safe, but it was not so near to Birkbeck. It took 20 minutes on foot (there was no tube station close the dorm, and it was located between King’s Cross and Russell Square). Although student dorms seem to be reasonable and suitable for long stayers in price and environmental conditions, it is necessary for applicants to book it as soon as possible.”

“I was staying in a house for ‘visiting academics’ in Nunhead/Brockley, cheaper than a hostel and the people are really nice:  the house has interesting people staying for days or months there. Contact: roomtolet2@yahoo.co.uk.”

Couchsurfing - couch surfing is free

Crash Padder - costs a bit but is much cheaper than a hotel room. It is designed for business people, professionals etc rather than students.

College Hall – “just behind Birkbeck (Malet St). The cost was reasonable and I was very satisfied since the rooms were big, clean, beautiful with their own bathrooms (there is also the possibility to share the bathroom) and, including breakfast which was very good.”

“I would recommend the University of London Housing Service especially their page on houses of residence. I stayed at Regina College in South Kensington which took an hour to walk to Birkbeck, but would have been much faster on the tube. It cost approx £20 per night (double room) including a basic breakfast and dinner.

Another good option may be Air B'n'B where you can sublet apartments from Londoners who are out of town. It might be a good option especially if two or three people attending summer school would sublet somewhere together. I also searched for sublet options on Gumtree (unsuccessfully) but it might be more fruitful for others.”
