Visiting Research Fellows

The Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities (BIH) welcomes applications to join the Institute as Visiting Research Fellows in the 2019-20 academic year from established researchers from outside the UK whose focus is relevant to the BIH.

Established in 2004, the BIH aims to stimulate research, public debate and collaboration among academics and intellectuals on important public issues of our time. Key to its remit is the promotion of new ideas and forms of understanding in the humanities alongside analysing the role of critical theory in elaborating a more just future. As part of this mission, the BIH aims to foster a climate of interdisciplinary research and collaboration among colleagues both from three schools – Arts, Law and Social Sciences, History and Philosophy (SSHP) - and within the wider academic community of the College.

What we offer Visiting Research Fellows

BIH Visiting Research Fellowships last from a minimum of four weeks up to a maximum of twelve weeks. We offer the opportunity to connect with leading academics in the humanities and to share your research with our wider academic community. Each Fellow is required to organise at least one public event during their time at the College, and to write about that experience via a blog post. The Institute provides a stipend of £1000 per month, plus office space and library access for the duration of your stay. The BIH can host one applicant nominated by each of the three funding schools (Arts, Law and SSHP) over the course of each academic year.

How to Apply

Applications for the 2019/20 academic year are now closed. Applications for 2020/21 will open in April 2020.

Applications must to be emailed to the BIH by a Birkbeck member of staff from one of our three funding schools (Arts, Law and SSHP).

International researchers interested in applying for a fellowship should, in the first instance, identify which members of staff they would like to work with during their proposed fellowship and contact them to ascertain if they are willing to act as nominator for the application. Staff emails and research interests can be found on their individual departmental profiles. Each application requires at least one academic from Birkbeck to act as a nominator, and a written supporting statement from this individual.

Visiting Fellows should also be mindful of the term dates when applying for Fellowships, which should take place during term time. Dates for the upcoming and future academic years can be viewed here.

Once a nominator has been agreed, applicants should complete the Visiting Research Fellowship Application form electronically and then pass it on to their supporting Birkbeck staff member, who can add their statement before sending it along with a one page CV to the BIH Manager Lou Miller.

Successful applicants should check any visa requirements for their stay before travelling via Birkbeck resources here or UK Government resources here

Confirmation of receipt will be provided for all applications. If you do not receive this, please contact the office on 0207 631 6612 to make sure your application has been received.

If you have any questions about the BIH Visiting Fellowship scheme, please contact Lou Miller.
