Visiting fellowships

The Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities (BIH) welcomes applications to join the Institute as a Visiting Research Fellow. We invite applications from established researchers based outside the UK whose focus is relevant to the BIH mission. Fellowship applications must be made in conjunction with a host school and named academic within Birkbeck.

BIH Visiting Research Fellowships are from a minimum of four weeks up to a maximum of twelve weeks. In collaboration with the BIH and colleagues within the College, Visiting Fellows organise at least one public event, seminar or workshop during their time at the College, and provide a blog post about their experiences.

Fellows are given a stipend of up to £1,000 per month, plus office space and library access for the duration of their stay. The BIH can host one fellow per term over the course of each academic year.

Successful applicants should check any visa requirements for their stay before travelling via Birkbeck resources, or on the UK Government website.

Please  if you have any questions.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISITING FELLOWSHIP

  • During 2020, applications for fellowships have been suspended. Fellows agreed for this year will become BIH Visiting Fellows for 2020-2021. Future applications will be welcome from the Spring.
  • International researchers interested in applying for a fellowship should, in the first instance, identify which members of staff they would like to work with during their proposed fellowship and contact them to ascertain if they are willing to act as nominator for the application. Staff research interests and relevant email addresses are available on individual staff profiles. Each application requires at least one academic from Birkbeck as a nominator who will be asked to provide a written statement in support of the application.
  • As fellowships must take place during term time, you are advised to check term dates for upcoming academic years.
  • Once a nominator has been agreed, applicants should ; this can be completed electronically and passed to the supporting Birkbeck staff member who will add their statement before sending it along with the applicant's one-page CV to BIH. Applications will be considered by the BIH steering group at termly meetings from Spring 2021 onwards.
