The Domestic Threshold in Art and Culture of the Nineteenth Century, 1830-1880.

Taking urban middle class domestic space, this thesis examines shifting relationships between home and street. From the outside in: urban street rhythm, the front door, the postman and other callers, burglary and law enforcement,  the area as spectacle. From the inside out: privacy and security, rooms with a view, the hallway.
