‘As a woman my country is the whole world.’ Nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and the gender of Vorticism.

My research project investigates the contribution made by Jessica Dismorr, Helen Saunders and Dorothy Shakespear to the visual culture of London on the eve of the First World War, exploring their position as female artists working at the centre of empire at a time of social and political upheaval amid anxieties about mass immigration and women’s suffrage. My project aims to demonstrate that these artists were profoundly engaged with contemporary ideas about cosmopolitanism and nationalism and that these ideas intersected with issues of gender in complex and challenging ways.
