‘The Materials of Method’: Fugitive Knowledge and Romantic Apprehension.
My thesis explores the pursuit of complete knowledge through readings of romantic-period encyclopaedias, instructional manuals, museum descriptions, and poetry. I am particularly interested in the bibliographic practices used in the period to compile and contain ‘fugitive pieces’: ephemeral, occasional, fragmentary texts which resist coherent or permanent organisation.
