Legitimation and Enchantment: Science Fiction in the Occult Revival, 1860-1926.

My project explores early Science Fiction’s use of modern occult concepts to engage with radically transformative mechanistic and empiricist narratives. I examine a selection of representative texts that deploy (and sometimes create) science fictional tropes and generic assumptions to dialogue with movements such as Theosophy, Spiritualism and ritual magic.
