Mairi MacDonald (ILAS)

Discourses and Representations of Poverty in the Paintings of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682).

Mairi's thesis will examine Murillo’s images of poor people in relation to debates about poverty and charitable assistance in treatises, religious writings and official documents of the period. It will consider to what extent, if at all, those representations express changing perceptions of the poor and poor relief in Early Modern Spanish culture.
