The Struggle on Stage: theatre, proletarian cultures and social emancipation in Lisbon, 1890-1926.

Marked by significant sociopolitical transformations, the early 20th century in Portugal was also characterized by a stronger involvement of the working-classes in the processes of cultural production.  Exploring the aesthetical, political, and social effects of different modes of proletarian presence in the theatrical sphere (as playwright and actor, but also as character and spectator), this research proposes a reading of the relation established between a political subject and a specific cultural form during this particular historical period.
