12 January - 11 February 2015: Exercises in Orientation

How do contemporary Cypriot artists orientate themselves in a landscape marked by conflict? What kind of issues do they seek to address when they choose to do so, and how does their work contribute to our understanding of landscape? These are some of the questions initiated by Exercises on Orientation, a curatorial project investigating the significance of landscape in the work of contemporary Cypriot artists.

Roundtable discussion with Alev Adil (University of Greenwich), Michael Anastassiades (designer), Mustafa Hulusi (artist), Gabriel Koureas (Birkbeck, University of London) and Elena Parpa (arts writer/researcher).

Initially presented as part of the exhibition Other Indications held at NiMAC (Cyprus, 2013), Exercises in Orientation involved the development of two projects: Transcapes/The Halted Traveler (2013) by artist Maria Loizidou and Overtones (2013) by Antonis Antoniou. For the exhibition at the Peltz Gallery, the project includes Mustafa Hulusi’s Recollections of Underdevelopment (2014) and Panayiotis Michael’s Landscape (2013).

Antonis Antoniou (b. 1978) lives and works in Nicosia (Cyprus). His sound projects, including his on-going work RainZonanceS, aim to expose the experiential attributes of unusual places using sound and light. He is the co-founder of the band Monsieur Doumani. He is currently PhD candidate in Music Composition at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Mustafa Hulusi (b. 1971) lives and works in London (UK). Since 2002, he has exhibited widely through solo and group exhibitions in the UK and internationally. In 2007, Hulusi represented the Republic of Cyprus at the 52nd International Exhibition of Contemporary Art of La Biennale di Venezia.

Maria Loizidou lives and works in Nicosia (Cyprus). Since the 1980s, she has exhibited widely, creating public projects (Fatima, Portugal) and giving lectures at various institutions. Through her collaborations with museums and art galleries (Maria Lund, Paris, Kalfayan Gallery, Athens), she seeks to explore the social and the political, placing an emphasis on 'the power of fragility'.

Panayiotis Michael (b. 1966) lives and works in Nicosia (Cyprus). In 2005, he represented the Republic of Cyprus at the 51st International Exhibition of Contemporary Art of La Biennale di Venezia. Since 2012 he is the co-founder of pick nick and was co-founder of Artrageous Group from 2004-2005. In 2013, he was an artist-in-residence at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin.

Exercises in Orientation is curated by Elena Parpa and is partly funded by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus. For more information:
