Welcome to the School of Arts.  It has been part of Birkbeck’s mission since the first meeting of the London Mechanics’ Institute in November 1823 to make Higher Education accessible to men and, seven years later, to women from a wide spectrum of educational and other backgrounds.* As a result of this historic remit, it is one of the pleasures both of teaching and learning at Birkbeck that we attract a diverse student population who bring a wealth of knowledge and talent to the collective learning experience. Catering to such a richly varied constituency has taught us the value of supporting our students at every stage of their study – and particularly in their first undergraduate year.

My role is to supplement the support available in the School of Arts by helping you to acquire, or to recover, the confidence, learning habits and skills to enable you to maximize the intellectual, personal and professional benefits of following your chosen programme.

The study skills I can help you with include:

  • Embarking on, or returning to study
  • Enhancing your confidence in yourself as a student
  • Managing your time and the information you gather
  • Diversifying your reading techniques
  • Taking notes from ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ sources
  • Critical thinking skills – especially in the disciplines of the Arts and Humanities
  • Writing Essays and Dissertations
  • Referencing and avoiding plagiarism by knowing why, when and how to introduce the results of your reading into your own work
  • Improving your confidence in the use of Academic English – from sentences to style
  • Learning techniques for acquiring vocabulary in your first and second languages
  • Revision skills and exam techniques, i.e. taking the fear out of exams

Each of these topics is explored through the course of the academic year in a weekly programme of workshops in the School of Arts which are offered to all students - Certificate, Undergraduate and Postgraduate - and which cover:  Study Skills, Essay Writing, and Language and Grammar.

  • Additional resources can be found in this Moodle module entitled 'School of Arts Study Skills' included in the Moodle list of all students in the School of Arts.

I also offer one-to-one assistance to undergraduate students in the School of Arts. This support is focused primarily on academic issues, but if other kinds of difficulties or stress have arisen I will listen and then direct you to appropriate Birkbeck Student Support Services.

Students are usually referred to me by Personal or Year-Tutors, but if you are an undergraduate student in the School of Arts, you may book an appointment to see me by emailing me at:

Congratulations on choosing to study in the School of Arts, we look forward to enriching your learning experience.
