Anthony Bale awarded Leverhulme Prize
Dr Anthony Bale, Reader in Medieval Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, has been awarded a 2011 Philip Leverhulme Prize.
Dr Anthony Bale, Reader in Medieval Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, has been awarded a 2011 Philip Leverhulme Prize. These Prizes are made to outstanding young scholars who have made a substantial and recognised contribution to their particular field of study at international level and are designed to fund research activity over two to three years.
Dr Bale said that the prestigious and generous prize would provide him with the opportunity to ‘think deeply about my new research, which will explore European ideas of the Holy Land in the Middle Ages.’ Part of the award will be used to study archives and historic locations in Jerusalem, the US, France and England.
His research interests include late medieval English literature, culture and popular religion, the histories and theories of anti-Semitism, and the histories of blood libel and ritual murder. In 2012 he will be organising an AHRC-funded Research Network: Remembered Places and Invented Traditions which will explore what the loss of the Holy Land meant to Western European culture in the centuries after 1291.
He teaches on the BA English, MA Medieval Literature and supervises doctoral students working on medieval topics.
