Physics at Birkbeck College


The Birkbeck College Physics Department closed as of 1 October 1997. Some of its teaching and research activities have moved to the Department of Physics & Astronomy at University College London. Another part of it has remained at Birkbeck as the Theoretical Physics Research Unit. Please see below for more details.

If you wish to do a part-time physics degree, apply directly to Birkbeck and you will be automatically considered for the UCL course.

Remaining at Birkbeck to pursue their research activities as the Theoretical Physics Research Unit are


The Condensed Matter Research Group has transferred to the Department of Physics & Astronomy at University College London with effect from 1 October 1997, and is now part of a very substantial experimental and theoretical group with a very wide range of research activities in condensed matter science. Those who have transferred to UCL are:

Research studentships will be available. Nationals of a member state of the EU may apply directly to the European Commission for a Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) Grant to work with us.
