    • Most modules are assessed by a combination of continuous assessment and an examination taken in the summer term. The examination usually makes up 80% of the final mark.

  • Attendance
      • Two–three evenings a week. 
      • October–June.

      • Four years part-time.
  • Entry requirements
      • All applicants must attend a management selection evening and complete tests in English and mathematics.
      • Over 21: good level of mathematical ability; applicants may be required to take a further mathematics test.
      • Under 21: normal university entry requirements.

  • Teaching

    • Lectures, tutorials and seminars. For each module you will have weekly three-hour evening sessions with the lecturer, who will work through the material along with exercises and examples. Coursework, past exam papers and other resources are available online to download.

Statistics and Management (BSc) - 2013/2014 entry

Methods of modern management and the application of statistics and operational research to the problems of business and management are the focus of this interdisciplinary degree, offered jointly by the Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics, and the Department of Management. You will be encouraged to take a systematic approach to problem-solving and to focus on the collection, presentation and interpretation of data.

    • The Birkbeck Library contains copies of all the recommended texts for the programme. There are facilities for private study in the library, which has late-night opening every day of the week. In addition, the College has several computer workstation rooms. Lecturing staff are available either in regular office hours or by appointment to discuss your work, and each student has a personal tutor who can give general study advice. Birkbeck has a full programme of study skills courses to help students returning to education.

      The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics has a first-rate teaching record. It was praised in the last Quality Assurance Agency inspection for the level of support and guidance available to students, and for the constructive undergraduate admissions procedure, which enables students from a wide variety of backgrounds to gain access to higher education.

      • We encourage you to apply as early as possible, though we still consider applications up to the end of September.
      • All eligible applicants are interviewed. Interviews normally take place between April and September, and are by arrangement.
