    • Each module has an examination at the end of the year. Regularly assessed coursework usually contributes 20% of the marks for the module; normally this consists of between two and four take-home exercise sets, but there may be in-class tests for some modules.

  • Attendance
      • Three evenings a week.
      • October–June.
      • One daytime examination per module in the May–June examination period.

      • Four years part-time.
  • Entry requirements
      • A-level mathematics or equivalent. If you do not have such a qualification, we would ask you to take an entrance test.
      • All applicants have to attend a management selection evening.
      • Good written and spoken English.

  • Teaching

    • For each module you will typically come for one evening a week during the autumn and spring terms, with revision lectures in the summer term.

      Teaching will mostly involve face-to-face lectures, with a mix of explaining new material and working through examples. Some modules have a computing component, and this involves sessions in workstation rooms for which the class is usually split into smaller groups.

Mathematics and Accounting (BSc) - 2013/2014 entry

There are numerous career pathways for mathematicians and those with accountancy training – accountancy, financial services, research and analysis, to name but a few. Designed for students with mathematical abilities who are interested in the theory of the subject and in the application of mathematical methods to commercial and scientific problems, this course develops a rational approach to problem-solving. It concentrates on the methods and modelling techniques of mathematics, but also provides the theoretical background for these ideas. So you will develop a broad knowledge of a range of mathematical skills, together with an understanding of managerial and financial accounting.

    • The Birkbeck Library contains copies of all the recommended texts for the programme. There are facilities for private study in the library, which has late night opening every day of the week. In addition, the College has several computer workstation rooms. Lecturing staff are available either in regular office hours or by appointment to discuss your work, and each student has a personal tutor who can give general study advice. Birkbeck has a full programme of study skills courses to help students returning to education.

      The Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics has a first-rate teaching record. It was praised in the last Quality Assurance Agency inspection for the level of support and guidance available to students, and for the constructive undergraduate admissions procedure, which enables students from a wide variety of backgrounds to gain access to higher education.
