In a very different context, however, lower-class bodies at work were admitted into the national iconography, as on this photograph of rural labourers included in the catalogue of the Chilean section at the Pan-American Exhibition at Buffalo, 1901. World fairs and industrial exhibitions were important occasions for Argentina, Brazil and Chile to attract foreign investors and immigrants, and pictures of an eager and laborious population helped forge a vision of countries destined to thrive and prosper.
