Overview
On this Introduction to Greek II short course we offer you a thorough and engaging grounding in Classical Greek. We will cover Classical Greek grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary to equip you to study original adapted passages of Classical Greek literature. We will be working through the textbook Reading Greek (Cambridge, 2007), supported by other material tailored to the needs of our class.
Teaching on this course is vibrant and varied, including grammar guidance and practice in reading Greek each lesson. The focus will be on enabling you to achieve reading fluency based on a deep understanding of the structure of the language. We will cover new grammar points every week, as well as translation practice and simple English into Greek composition.
By the end of Introduction to Greek II, you will be able to:
- understand the basic grammar and syntax of Greek
- read simple (or adapted) Greek prose
- write your own simple Greek sentences
- translate Greek with attention to literary qualities and precise shades of meaning.
As the second of two courses, you can take Introduction to Greek II after completing our Introduction to Greek I course. The two courses can also be taken separately depending on your proficiency.
Please note: each weekly session will be two hours in length and run from 6pm to 8pm.
This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

For direct entry onto this course you should already have begun learning Greek, for example on a beginner's course or at a summer school.
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

How to apply
You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
