Overview

This short course, Regulating Sex and Sexuality, offers you a critical sociological and cultural introduction to the formal and informal regulation of sex, sexuality and intimacy. You will explore the ways in which sexual, romantic and domestic intimacy are socially constructed and subject to relations of power, rather than being thought of as private, personal and natural. The course also draws on:

  • feminist and queer theory to question the private/public boundary
  • relationships between formal and informal practices of social regulation and control
  • changing constructions of sexual identity and deviance
  • the role of state power in private life.

We refer to a variety of case studies on this course to understand connections between contemporary and historical policies and practices. We aim to provide you with a theoretically informed foundation to explore key debates around sexuality, intimacy and social and state regulation and control.

This course is ideal if you have a professional or personal interest in the field of criminology. You will also find it of particular interest if you wish to enhance your career through Continuing Professional Development in this area.

This short course is assessed by a 5000-word essay.
