The processing and analysis of large-scale datasets is at the core of bioinformatics. Recent advances in experimental methods have allowed us to survey genes, transcripts, proteins and small molecules in biological samples and link them to biological processes, phenotypic differences and disease.

This online Omics short course introduces you to a subset of these methods. We dedicate around half of the course to lectures and practicals covering the analysis of data from Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) experiments, including:

  • Genomics
  • Transcriptomics
  • immunoinformatics (using command-line software and R).

For the remaining sessions, we provide you with an introduction to systems biology, the modelling of biological networks (using Python) and the basics of proteomics.

We will provide you with pre-recorded material on the theoretical parts of the lectures followed by live practical sessions that reinforce your understanding and train you to use popular unix-based software. In these practicals, you are introduced to Jypyter notebooks and basic Python skills for the network modelling part and hone your skills in the use of the Unix command line to manipulate files and extract information. You will learn to analyse mass spectrometry data using popular proteomics software.

In the NGS data analysis part of the course, we focus on the use of the latest bioinformatics software written for the pre-processing of NGS data and we use Bioconductor packages in R for statistical analysis and visualisation of the results.

We accept graduates in any scientific discipline on this postgraduate-level course who have a basic understanding of bioinformatics and a background in statistics and the use of R. You will also find it useful to have understanding of mathematical concepts to A-level standard. You will need to be familiar with Unix/Linux and basic command-line skills in the Unix environment (creating directories, moving files, copying and editing files). There is no requirement to be familiar with Python as we teach you the basics required to do the network practicals as part of this course.

This course is assessed by two online quizzes (67%) and coursework (33%).

    This short course has no prerequisites.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

    You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis – so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
