On this Financial Markets short course you will become familiar with the principles of finance. We introduce you to the characteristics of equity, fixed income and derivatives markets and provide you with a grounding in financial models so you can competently evaluate different financial assets. You will gain knowledge about:

  • discount cash flow models
  • the Capital Asset Pricing Model and option pricing models
  • the Modigliani-Miller Theory
  • issues related to credit derivatives.

On successful completion of the Financial Markets short course you will not only have become confident in reading articles in financial journals such as The Financial Times or The Economist, but you will also be able to critically analyse their contents.

This postgraduate-level course is suitable for anyone wishing to work, or already working, in the finance industry. This course will also be useful for those wishing to take the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1 qualification.

Assessment on this course is via an assignment (20%) and a final examination (80%).

    Entry requirements

    Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.

    No previous formal training in finance is necessary, however an interest in the day-to-day events of the financial market is essential. Confidence in your quantitative skills is desirable, for example mathematics, physics or another quantitative subject to A-level standard.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

    How to apply

    You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
