Step Up to Postgraduate Study in Arts, Law, Business and Social Sciences is an innovative academic skills course designed to help you improve your skills and gain confidence in your abilities before the start of your postgraduate course. It is relevant for anyone thinking of studying an arts, law, business or social sciences subject in the future. We’ve designed it to help enhance the study skills you will need and give you a sense of what postgraduate study at master’s level will be like.

This module will give you a head start so that when it comes to starting your master’s you’ll feel prepared. It aims to develop your skills in how to:

  • approach research
  • use appropriate referencing styles
  • develop essay writing and other assessment techniques
  • understand how to use a critical-thinking approach.

On the Step Up course you will study the following topics:

  • Critical thinking
  • Plagiarism, referencing and bibliographies
  • Resources for research
  • Seminar skills
  • The language of academic English
  • Planning and structuring assignments

You will attend live, online weekly seminars with an experienced tutor and your learning will be supported by Moodle, our virtual learning environment. We also provide extensive online resources for you to work through in your own time, improving your skills, knowledge and confidence as you go. You will also have early access to Birkbeck Library and valuable e-resources, such as bibliographic databases.

Studying this course will give you the opportunity to network with other students from different backgrounds, as well as those interested in different academic disciplines.

If you go on to enrol on a postgraduate course at Birkbeck after completing Step Up, we’ll give you a tuition fee discount equivalent to the cost of this course.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

    Step Up to Postgraduate Study in Arts, Law, Business and Social Sciences is open to students who already hold an offer of a place at Birkbeck or perhaps at another university. It’s also open to anybody who wants to experience what it might be like to study at master’s level, before making their decision.

    This short course has no prerequisites.

    As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.

    International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

    How to apply

    You enrol directly onto the classes you would like to take, using the Enrol Now link below. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then enrol onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
