    Research overview

While I have recently been engaged in teaching post-war Japanese cultural history and popular culture in Japan and East Asia, my other research interests include Japanese silent and early sound film within the transnational context of the film industry as well as the importance of female artistic performers within the intermedial film practices of the interwar years. In my PhD thesis titled “Camille in Crisis – Adaptation, Stardom and Scandal in La Dame aux Camélias on the Japanese Silent Screen” I explored questions about cinema in the Japanese modern experience of the 1920s and early 1930s as well as cinema as a space for contested images of female agency as mediated by star actresses.
