Research interests
- Neurocognitive mechanisms governing vulnerability to anxiety and depression, and resilience
- Attentional control training in anxiety and depression
- Building longer term resilience and empowering women with breast cancer
- Empowering breast cancer nurses with resilience and emotional flexibility
Research overview
Since developing and establishing Attentional Control Theory with Mike Eysenck, my research has focussed on unravelling the neurocognitive mechanisms behind anxiety and depression. A major discovery of this line of work has been the identification of Attentional Control as a determinant of emotional vulnerability and resilience. The work of my lab has shown that attentional control can be targeted and trained to empower cognitive and emotional well-being. With accumulating evidence from my lab, as well as others, there is promise that resilience can be learned and trained across the lifespan.
Recently, my translational work has focused on building resilience through the training of attentional control and cognitive flexibility in women diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. Our research focuses on sustaining longer term emotional and cognitive health through the exercises that promote psychological flexibility. You can read more about this below.
Impact:
Birkbeck's Integrative Centre for Building Resilience in Breast Cancer (BRiC)
I established the Integrative Centre for Building Resilience in Breast Cancer (BRiC) at BBK in 2018, with current active members standing at just under 1900 UK women with breast cancer. With the scarcity of psychological care in survivorship, rates of emotional and cognitive vulnerability to depression and anxiety loom high. By combining neuroscience and clinical science, BRiC’s unique translational approach educates the practice of resilience in breast cancer.
Through funding received from the ESRC and Wellcome Trust, it has been possible to support two PhD studentships with our research establishing that neurocognitive training can result in sustained reductions in anxiety and depression in women with breast cancer (see Swainston, J.E., & Derakshan, N. Training cognitive control to reduce emotional vulnerability in breast cancer. Psycho-Oncology 27(7), 1780-1786, featuring across 26 media outlets (see last point in 'Latest News', see also: Chapman, B., Helmrath, S. & Derakshan, N. (2019). Perceived cognitive functioning and its influence on emotional vulnerability in breast cancer. Health Psychology Open 6 (2), 2055102919871661).
We have collaborated with hugely successful mindfulness app Headspace to assess the efficacy of mindfulness based meditation in combination with her training intervention on reduction of psychological distress in women with breast cancer (Swainston, J. & Derakshan, N.; under review; Reduced anxiety following mindfulness and adaptive working memory training in breast cancer; Mindfulness)
COVID-19 collateral damage effects on breast cancer
We have highlighted the collateral damage brought about by COVID_19 on treatment delays and cancellations impairing emotional health in women with breast cancer (Swainston, J., Chapman, B., Grunfeld, E., & Derakshan, N. (2020). COVID-19 lockdown and its adverse impact on psychological health in women with breast cancer. Frontiers in Psychology; Psycho-Oncology, https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.02033 and featured in The Telegraph; as well as Chapman, B., Swainston, J., Grunfeld, E., & Derakshan, N. (2020). COVID-19 outbreak effects on job security and emotional functioning amongst women living with breast cancer https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.582014, Frontiers in Psychology; Psycho-Oncology).
BRiC's blog: Panning for Gold
BRiC’s psychoeducational blog (Panning for Gold) which summarises BRiC’s Collective Voice has to date 91K followers and was rated amongst the top 10 best breast cancer blogs by @healthline earlier in 2020. BRiC’s psychoeducational network supports women through face-to-face meetings, emotion regulation exercises, and online interactive discussions, empowering resilience.
Through collaborative links with the biggest charity for research and care in breast cancer, Breast Cancer Now, I have developed popular blog posts on PTSD (8K listeners) and as well as anxiety and depression in breast cancer (26K listeners) (see media). Other podcasts include a two series programme with Novartis pharmaceuticals, on ‘a tough job made tougher’ highlighting nurses’ emotional vulnerability.
See here for testimonials and here for a short video of what people say about BRiC.
News!
In 2021, BRiC merges with Breast Cancer Now to set up ‘BRiC_Nurses’, a new psychoeducational centre for building resilience in frontline breast cancer nurses.
Cognitive training in adolescents
We have used adaptive cognitive training to improve educational well-being in adolescents, implemented initially at the City of London Boys’ and Girls’ schools in 2016. See our recent publication. The training quickly became a core part of the school’s academic offer with the Learning and Teaching Support Officers considering the training for anxious and depressed students.

Lab information
Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab (in MERLiN)
My lab investigates the neurocognitive mechanisms behind emotional vulnerability and resilience in anxiety and depression. We develop and implement cognitive training interventions to alleviate as well as protect against anxiety and depressive vulnerability.
We take a multidisciplinary and integrative (mixed) approach in our research methods when conducting our work. Examples of these include EEG methods, eye-tracking, in addition to cognitive and behavioural measures. A number of our recent studies have also included qualitative approaches including IPA and thematic analysis.
Our lab enjoys the contribution and involvement of many enthusiastic undergraduate, masters and postgraduate students who are keen to pursue their research with us and who are not afraid to push the boundaries of our research in exciting ways!
