Biography
Having originally trained as a Fine Artist (B.A. in Painting, Slade School of Fine Art) I studied for my M.A. in History of Art from Birkbeck College and although I continue to paint, I am now mainly involved in teaching History of Art, focussing on the Renaissance and Baroque periods, which I have taught at Birkbeck since 1991. I have also lectured at The National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, Sotheby’s Institute, The History of Art Studies, The Open University and for many other organisations.
At Heatherley's School of Fine Art I teach painting to art students, and organise the art history programme with an emphasis on portraiture. At Birkbeck my teaching emphasises the visual within a more academic context. I try to reconcile the academic and the practical sides of my interests. My publications include articles on Baroque art and more recent painting, alerting me to the relationship between art produced in different periods.
There is probably some connection between studying past art and producing art now, but although it is not straightforward I do find this dual focus of my work interesting. Each aspect is revealing about the other, sometimes in ways which cannot be articulated.
