    Biography

Dr Dimitrakopoulos holds degrees from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (Athens), the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Institut d’Etudes Européennes) and the University of Hull.

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has held fellowships at Oxford and the LSE after having worked as a stagiaire in the Secretariat General of the European Commission. He has won research funding from, inter alia, the ESRC, the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, and the European Union.

He directs the MSc in European Politics & Policy, has served on the ESRC’s Peer Review College (2010-14) and has acted as external referee for the Agence Nationale de la Recherche, France, the Scientific Research Fund, Flanders, Belgium, as well as several academic journals. In addition to English and Greek, he is fluent in French and has a working knowledge of the German language.

He is currently serving on the Brexit Policy Panel convened under the auspices of the ESRC’s UK in a Changing Europe programme. The panel is a cross-disciplinary group of social scientists that provides ongoing commentary and predictive analysis on the Brexit process, seeks to inform the public about Brexit, by drawing on the leading academics researching Britain’s departure from the European Union. The panel’s members complete a monthly survey that tracks the outlook of Brexit negotiations and provides a picture of expert opinion on where we have got to in the Brexit process and a forecast of where we are headed. A two-page report is then produced that analyses and aggregates the views of academics, with some key take-hone findings and infographic trackers on key issues. The list of the committee's members is public.

In 2018 he served as a jury member for the award of the best paper prize for the best paper presented on European politics and society at the 2017 annual meeting of the American Political Science Association.

In August 2020 he was awarded a Jean Monnet Chair (the first in Birkbeck's history) that will focus on the politics of parliamentary democracy and European integration. To find out more about the Jean Monnet Chair, visit its website.

Dr Dimitrakopoulos is also the curator of Birkbeck's Talking Europe vlog.

    Research

    Research overview

His research and teaching focuses on the politics of European integration both at the EU and the domestic level of government. He has particular interests in the institutional development and operation of the European Union, the role of ideas and norms in political processes, the conflict between the supporters of regulated capitalism and their neo-liberal opponents over the future of the EU, the way in which EU policy is implemented at the national level (especially in the UK, France and Greece), and how national parties define (and, when in government, pursue) their preferences on the EU. His work has appeared in leading refereed journals including Political Studies, the European Journal of Political Research, the European Journal of International Relations, the Journal of Public Policy, the Journal of Common Market Studies, the Journal of European Public Policy and the European Law Journal.

Current research focuses on the politics of emergency in the European Union (see here the paper presented in the 2016 UACES conference in London), the reform of the Greek tax collection institutions (project funded by the LSE; see here a related conference paper; the corresponding book co-authored with Prof. Argyris G. Passas appeared in October 2019).
