    Biography

I graduated with first-class honours from Birkbeck College in 1994, where my studies focused on History of Art and Literature. I was awarded an MA in Visual Culture from Middlesex University in 1998, and I have a teaching qualification (Cert. Ed.). I was awarded my PhD by the University of East Anglia in 2015, for a thesis titled ‘A Study of Winifred Knights, 1915-1933’.

My research interests include: inter-war ‘moderate’ modernism; the British School at Rome (established in 1901);  the representation and status of motherhood in nineteenth and twentieth-century art and society, particularly in the United Kingdom. Committed to communicating knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm for art and design history, I have a wide range of experience teaching at the higher education level. Current employment includes a range of courses for the Open University, for Birkbeck, the WEA and as a freelance lecturer in British art and design.
