Spring updates from the Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics

Academics in the Department of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics have been sharing their expertise at a number of events this Spring:

  • Hélyette Geman was an invited panellist at Chatham House to discuss The Future of Extractive Industries. The event was held at Chatham House on the 30 April 2019.
  • Sarah Hart was the invited Mathematics expert on Channel 4’s "Child Genius" programme, broadcast in May 2019. Sarah also chaired a panel on Symmetry and asymmetry in mathematics, music and poetry, as part of Birkbeck Arts week on 24 May, with pianist Iain Burnside and poet Fran Lock.
  • Stephen Wright visited the Reserve Bank of India in February 2019, as the first non-Indian academic to be awarded an RBI Visiting Fellowship. He plans to complete the project, with the publication of a working paper "The Indian savings miracle and its implications for monetary policy" and a presentation to the newly created Monetary Policy Committee of India, in November 2019.
