Dr Jamie Larkin reports on the first research findings from the AHRC-funded Mapping Museums project. Following a year-long data collection effort covering some 4000 museums, the first analysis has been undertaken of the patterns of museum openings and closures since 1960, finding that museum closures are rising more steeply now than at any point since 1960, and that this is mainly due to a decline in the number of state run museums whereas the number of independent museums is growing.
