Null Object

Nick Lambert, Lecturer in Digital Art and Culture, chaired a panel with veteran Autodestructive artist Gustav Metzger and London Fieldworks - Jo Joelson and Bruce Gilchrist - at Central St Martins on 5th February. This was organised to discuss the collaborative artwork Null Object: Gustav Metzger thinks about nothing which was first shown at Work Gallery in November 2012.

This innovative work linked a computer-brain interface with industrial manufacturing technology in order to carve a sculptural object in Portland stone. Using bespoke software, London Fieldworks produced 3D shape information from EEG readings of Metzger’s brainwaves as he attempted to think about nothing. This data was translated into instructions for a manufacturing robot, which carved out the shapes from the interior of a block of stone to create a void space. It was partly funded by the Arts Council and the Computer Arts Society.

Lambert was closely involved in development of this project and also contributed to a publication about the work. It also featured on the cover of DOMUS magazine, no.965. The panel session attracted a large and attentive audience, and a recording of the session can be found on YouTube.
