Birkbeck in global top 100 for latest QS subject rankings

College achieves high placings for many of its subjects in 2018 world tables.

Birkbeck, Malet Street campus as College places in the world’s top 100 institutions for English and Philosophy.

Birkbeck has been placed in the world’s top 100 institutions for English and Philosophy in the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject, which have just been published.

The College is also highly ranked for many other subjects with History, Psychology and Law also placed in the top 150 universities worldwide, while Geography figures within the top 200. Sociology and Linguistics were rated in the global top 250, Modern Languages in the top 300 and Biology in the top 500 by QS, which grades in excess of 950 universities across 48 different subject areas.

This year’s leagues tables give a strong showing for the College on a UK level, with Philosophy in the top 12 nationally, while Linguistics, Law and English in the top 25. Psychology, History and Geography were in the top 30 and Sociology, Modern Languages and Biology were given top 40 placings.

In broader subject groupings, the tables recognise Birkbeck at 160 in the world for Arts and Humanities, while Social Sciences and Management makes the top 400.

QS bases its rankings on datasets which include academic and employer reputation surveys and Scopus data used to evaluate research citations.

Master of Birkbeck Professor David Latchman said: “Birkbeck’s high placing once again among the world’s elite universities in the new QS Rankings highlights the College’s reputation for research in a wide range of subjects.

“We know that employers have long recognised the value of a Birkbeck education as well as the quality and dedication of students and, pleasingly, these rankings take this institutional reputation into account.”
