Life and Death in Early Modern Cities, a symposium with John Henderson and Vanessa Harding

This roundtable will be an opportunity to reflect on everyday life and the ever-present threat of mortality in the cities of late medieval and early modern Europe. It will celebrate the field-shaping work of Professor Vanessa Harding and Professor John Henderson, who are retiring from Birkbeck this year, by considering what we have learned from their important research on London, Florence and other urban centres from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries, ranging across key issues such as disease, charity, family, housing, religion, and burial practices. The event will include contributions from Vanessa Harding and John Henderson as well as current Birkbeck historians Kat Hill, Julian Swann and Brodie Waddell.

This event is supported by the Raphael Samuel History Centre.
