Join Dr Carmen Mangion for an afternoon devoted to the history (and tasting) of tea. Learn about the history of one of the first modern commodities of a consumer-oriented, globalising world through the lens of the British obsession with tea. Tea arrives in London in the seventeenth century, becoming an popular beverage at the heart of British elite society. By the end of the nineteenth century, it also is central to British working-class life. The seminar will take us on a journey of how tea became a global product associated with British identity, and we’ll encounter along the way, tea smuggling, tea adulteration and an imperial tea industry that moved from China to India and Sri Lanka. This is a great way to learn about the iconic British heritage and drink a bit of tea.
