Week 5: Material Constitution
Tables and chairs are made of particles. I think most people think that in addition to the particles, there are things like tables and chairs. But how could there be particles plus tables and chairs? If you put a chair on scales to weigh it, you don’t add up the weight of the chair and the weight of the particles – that would be to overcount. So shouldn’t we think, strictly speaking, there are no tables and chairs but only particles arranged in the chair way? In this meeting, we will consider this line of questioning and related issues about what exists.
