DECOLONIZING HISTORY

The Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, in collaboration with the Raphael Samuel History Centre, is holding a workshop for prospective students on Decolonising History. The event is designed to give prospective undergraduate students an opportunity to explore this important and timely topic, while also learning more about how we teach at Birkbeck History, Classics and Archaeology.

The workshop will include a roundtable discussion on the relationship between histories of decolonisation and public conversations about decolonising curriculum. We will explore how documents, stories, and other objects of knowledge about empire and colonialism continue to shape our everyday realities. We will ask, as historians, how we can think and what we can do about their presence in our lives. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to consider in smaller groups, together with professional historians and through the analysis of primary sources, how these debates connect with their own experiences and the lives around them.  There will be time set aside after the workshop for a Q&A for all prospective students and offer holders.

The event will take place at Birkbeck (main building) on Friday, 1 April 2022 from 1:30-3:30 (workshop), and 3:30-4:00 (prospective students Q&A)
