The Ability Programme launches on 14th October 2021 with our first event "What is Disability? - Your Unique Ability".

  • Why attend this workshop?

Understanding yourself is the foundation for making great choices about your career. Knowing yourself well means that you feel confident in sharing your strengths, interests, preferences and needs.

  • What we'll cover:

In this workshop we will be exploring how self-awareness is essential for developing goals that reflect what is truly important to you allowing you to value what makes you unique.

You will meet our Guest Speaker  Amad Ahmed who will share how the Ability Programme supported his career aspirations.

Speaker Bio:

Amad is an Accounting and Management student at Birkbeck who joined the Ability programme in his second year of study. The gaps in his employment history and late entry to higher education led to Amad avoid applying and interviewing for jobs, as he didn't know how to explain his ability or disability to them.

The Ability programme has helped Amad have a better understanding of the value he can bring to his employers and realise the areas he needs to work on. With the support he has received, Amad has won an internship at Change 100, where he was coached in workplace skills and will be starting a placement as a Summer Diversity Internship Programme at the Civil Service soon, where he hopes to join the Fast Stream Graduate Programme.

Key takeaway:

This will impact your self-efficacy and belief in what you can achieve helping you deal with some of the  challenges you may encounter in your job search.

We will also signpost resources on the Careers Portal which you can use to help you explore this further.

A Collaborate link will be sent out to delegate 24 hours before hand so please ensure your email address is correct and also check your spam email folder.

The Ability Programme will run until Summer 2022. It includes a suite of  specialised workshops, external speaker & networking events as well as bespoke one to one session days. We will also be able to offer a limited number of paid four week work placements which students can apply for. These will take place mostly in the Summer 2022.

If you have any accessibility or support requirements for the event, please email ability@bbk.ac.uk to let us know at least 2 working days in advance.
