As the final prelude to the 2021 Essay Film Festival, we invite you to join us at our Open Forum for practice-based research: a student-led initiative exploring essayistic forms and their relationship to academic research, social critique and artistic practice, held in collaboration with CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership.

This Open Forum will address the subject of multiple authorship in relation to the essay form. It will examine the ways in which essayistic practices – such as the use of crowdsourced footage, archival material, collective and collaborative approaches to filmmaking, and meditations such as translation, subtitling and restoration – bring more authors and more subjectivities into the picture. What would adopting a more complex view of authorship mean for the ways in which the essayistic is practiced and theorized?

The forum will be held in partnership with artist filmmaker Jenny Brady, whose work will be screened as part of the 2021 Essay Film Festival, and will showcase the work of PhD students Holly Isard, Robert Deakin and Florencia Llarull. Holly Isard considers the ways in which value is distributed among the collective of female administrators that populate Elizabeth Price’s A Restoration (2016). Robert Deaken discusses a collaborative filmmaking project that explores affective displacement in relation to a social housing estate in East London currently undergoing redevelopment. Florencia Llarul explores what it means to think with others across time through a reading of Le Souvenir d’un Avenir (2001) by Yannick Bellon and Chris Marker, and Imágenes de ningún lugar (2016) by Ruben Guzmán

Jenny Brady will respond to each presentation before the Q&A is opened up to the audience.

The forum will take place on Collaborate. After the presentations, there will be time for questions from the audience
