Becoming a professionally accredited counsellor or psychotherapist
Counselling and Psychotherapy at Birkbeck offers a number of routes to become an accredited counsellor or psychotherapist, depending on your current level of experience and training.
'TASTER' COURSES
Our short ‘taster’ courses can help you decide whether this is the right profession for you before you commit to a longer course of study. They are taught through a mixed programme of lectures and experiential learning. They are not formally assessed. They can be taken as a stand-alone unit or as a pathway to our main foundation courses in counselling.
SELECTION OF OUR CURRENT SHORT COURSES
- Counselling and Psychosocial Perspectives
- Introduction to Counselling
- Psychodynamic Counselling: an Introduction to Essential Theory
- Attachment, Emotional Regulation and Resilience
FOUNDATION COURSES
On completion of a foundation course, you may be eligible to apply for one of our clinical courses. Our clinical training usually also require you to have professional or clinical experience working with adults/children and adolescents, depending on the course you are applying for. All of our foundation courses act both as standalone courses for personal development or enhancement of skills in your existing career, and as a preparation for clinical training.
