Postgraduate courses

Our postgraduate programmes are research-led, with specialist modules taught by leading figures in their fields, and with a consistent focus on the fostering of intellectual curiosity and the development of independent thinking. We offer flexible programmes, which may be studied in the evening or in the day, focused on central aspects of philosophy in the broadly analytic tradition.

Our postgraduate courses are open to those with a first degree in philosophy wishing to progress to more advanced levels of study and also to those without undergraduate training in philosophy.

MA/MRES PHILOSOPHY

  • Study the central philosophical questions - in metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy and the theory of knowledge - and have the opportunity to delve deeper into more specific philosophical topics, based on your own interests.
  • develop your ability to write clearly, think critically and argue philosophically about some of the deepest questions in the Western philosophical tradition
  • take the 'conversion' MA route if you do not already have an academic background in philosophy.

POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA PHILOSOPHY

  • Our Postgraduate Certificate is ideal if you want to develop a grounding in philosophy, but are not yet ready to commit to an MA. It is very well suited to people with busy schedules.
  • Study our Postgraduate Diploma to learn the same elements as you would for our MA Philosophy, but without undertaking an independent research project (dissertation).
  • Explore the central philosophical questions and develop your ability to write clearly, think critically and argue philosophically about some of the deepest questions in the Western philosophical tradition.

MPHIL/PHD PHILOSOPHY

  • Our MPhil/PhD programme is an opportunity to undertake a major piece of research under the supervision of someone with academic expertise in your field.
  • We will offer academic supervision in a wide range of philosophical subjects.
  • A number of our recent PhD graduates have permanent academic posts in leading universities such as Vanderbilt University, University of St Andrews and the University of Birmingham among others.
