Postgraduate courses

Our department offers a rich selection of postgraduate degree programmes that allow students to explore diverse aspects of the past. Each degree draws on the unique expertise of our research staff and can be tailored to suit your own research interests.

POSTGRADUATE HISTORY COURSES

Our exciting range of postgraduate degrees offer students a chance to study the past at MA Level. You’ll learn from research-active historians, archaeologists and classicists in small groups, in diverse and dynamic classes held in the heart of central London.

We offer a huge range of modules and programmes, from pre-history to the present, and you’ll complete a dissertation with the support of a specialist supervisor in your field.

For students who do not meet the direct entry criteria, or who want to study more flexibly, we offer graduate certificates and postgraduate certificate and diploma programmes and short courses.

Birkbeck has long specialised in offering part time as well as full time postgraduate education, and from 2021-22 we are happy to offer our MA Historical Research as an online degree. You can choose to follow it entirely online, entirely in person, or blend your learning.

POSTGRADUATE CLASSICS AND ARCHAEOLOGY COURSES

Our exciting postgraduate degrees in classics and archaeology offer students the opportunity to study the ancient world and the material past at MA level with world experts in small-group classes held in the centre of London, or in the field.

Our programmes combine specialist optional modules including ancient political ideas, Greek tragedy, pre-history and the politics of heritage, as well as the option to study ancient Greek or Latin language.

For archaeologists, an intensive fieldschool, focusing on the archaeology of the River Thames in collaboration with professional archaeologists at Museum of London Archaeology, provides training in a range of practical excavation, survey and recording skills. Core modules focus on advanced-level critical and theoretical approaches and research methods. You’ll also complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice with the support of a specialist supervisor in your field.
