Study in the Department of Geography

Birkbeck has been providing world-class training in geography since the late 1800s. We offer interdisciplinary teaching by researchers doing applied research that aims to change the world, with an exciting range of expertise including community and development studies, human and physical geography, geographical information and social sciences.

Our graduates have gone on to careers in government and politics (e.g. working for the Environmental Agency, Hydrographic Office, several Country Councils), in higher education (e.g. LSE, University of Brighton, University of Birmingham), charity and voluntary work (Amnesty International, Commonwealth Society for the Deaf), environmental management and nature conservation (Fauna & Flora International, Forestry Commission, The National Trust) as well as business, management and consulting (Department of Trade & Industry).

Evening teaching allows our students to work or gain essential experience while studying for their degrees, putting our graduates at an advantage. They gain much from interaction with fellow students, many of whom already work in the sectors students hope to gain entry to.
