Birkbeck's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences has a strong record of dynamic research. In a joint submission with UCL for REF2021, Earth Systems and Environmental Science were ranked 17th nationally.

We share expertise, facilities and events with UCL, while the joint Birkbeck/UCL Institute of Earth and Planetary Sciences is one of the UK's leading centres of research and innovation in the field.

Training and support

  • Birkbeck and UCL jointly organise a weekly seminar series, to keep you abreast of groundbreaking research. 
  • Birkbeck staff and students can present their research at an informal seminar series. 
  • You can attend events organised by the Geological Society, the Mineralogical Society, the Royal Astronomical Society, the Royal Society and the Royal Institution, all in central London. 
  • Many academic conferences are held nearby and most offer discounts for research students.
