Guidance for prospective MPhil/PhD students

Students undertaking research in the area of biological sciences benefit from research supervision from world-leading experts and the shared research resources of Birkbeck and UCL, primarily through the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, a world-leading centre of structural and molecular biology. Our PhD students become part of an active research community which includes weekly research presentations, seminars from distinguished international scientists and the Graduate Studies lecture series.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) Biological Sciences was ranked 11th in the UK for our joint submission with UCL.

Students undertaking research in Earth and planetary systems will be based at Birkbeck and share expertise, facilities and events with UCL, while the Institute of Earth and Planetary Sciences is one of the UK's leading centres in the field. Research in this area encompasses the study of Earth systems, together with breakthroughs in space exploration and astrobiology. Our staff and students can present their research at Birkbeck and UCL's jointly run seminar series.

Research in Earth Systems and Environmental Science was ranked 17th nationally in a joint submission with UCL for REF2021.
