Psychoanalysis and History

Overview

Module description

This core module introduces key psychoanalytic concepts whilst situating psychoanalysis in various contexts of late nineteenth- and twentieth-century history. The main focus is on Britain (and the British psychoanalytical tradition), but some reference will be made to American, French and other national traditions of Freudian thought. The intention here is to illustrate the ways in which psychoanalysis has a history and was shaped by the periods in which it developed, and to suggest how key psychoanalytical concepts have evolved over time.
