Module description

During this one-week intensive module we explore the presence of the world of the Roman empire, in terms of material remains and general influence on visual culture, in key London museums such as the British Museum and Sir John Soane's Museum.

  • Casts and copies from the antique (V&A)
  • Early displays of antiquities in London museums (Sir John Soane's Museum)
  • Reimagining Rome (Kenwood)
  • Interpreting archaeology (London Mithraeum, Guildhall Amphitheatre)

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show good knowledge and understanding of a range of topics pertaining to the history and politics of museums and collecting, as well as the material culture of the Roman world
  • demonstrate familiarity with the particular collections held by a range of London museums.
