Introduction to Ancient Greek

  • Credit value: 30 credits at Level 4

  • Assessment: a three-hour examination (60%), take-home translation (20%) and 1.5-hour in-class test (20%)

Module description

In this module we introduce you to the basic principles of Classical Greek. You will learn basic grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary of the language, through which you will be able to read and translate into English simple passages of Greek prose. We will be using the text Reading Greek, as well as additional material depending on progress and the needs of the class. By the end of the year you will have gained sufficient knowledge of the language to be able to approach and successfully translate adapted passages of Greek prose.

No prior knowledge of the language is necessary.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand the basic grammar and syntax of Greek
  • read simple (or adapted) Greek prose
  • construct simple sentences in Greek
  • understand translation processes.
