Preparation for Map and Thesis

Overview

  • Credit value: 15 credits at Level 5
  • Convenor: Professor Gerald Roberts
  • Assessment: requirements for a notebook and field map (10%), compilation of a map using graphics software (30%), a literature review (30%) and a logistics and risk assessment (30%)

Module description

In this module we prepare you to undertake independent work for your final-year module, Map and Thesis. You will learn what is required for each of the four main components of Map and Thesis (Notebooks, Field Maps, Final Map, Thesis) and concepts of planning for field logistics and safety. We will reinforce how to keep a notebook of geological field observations and field safety considerations, and how to make field maps of the geology during fieldwork and link these to a notebook. We will also show you how to make a final map in a graphics package and write a thesis.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate what is required to complete a detailed field notebook including written descriptions, notes, annotated field diagrams and sketches
  • construct geological field maps on either 1:10k topographic base maps or using Google Earth images (or equivalent) as your base to record relevant geological detail
  • use a graphics software package such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape to digitally draw up and present your final map based on field evidence you have recorded on your field maps
  • communicate your work through the production of an 8000-word scientific thesis
  • demonstrate an understanding of safety aspects of conducting field work by producing risk assessments and of the planning and logistical requirements of undertaking independent field work by producing written reports.
