Module description
This module explores the construction and deconstruction of ideas and models of Spanishness from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day, and how they have been negotiated and contested through the study of culture. We will seek to problematise the myth of an essential national character in essays, short stories, poems, films and novels.
Some of the main themes are: debates on modernity; ideologies; gender and sexuality; minority nationalisms and conflict over nation; exile and national memories, among others.
The module is taught in English and Spanish, with all texts in Spanish.
