Crime and Science (Level 6)

Overview

Module description

In this module we explore the complex interface between crime and science, focusing on key topics such as:

  • neuroscience
  • genetics
  • forensics
  • psychiatric and psychological expertise.

We begin with an overview of historical attempts within criminology to ground the problem of criminal subjectivity in science, and then explore the different ways that genetics and neuroscience have been introduced into the field of criminology and criminal law.

The module raises questions about how media and contemporary culture have influenced the turn towards science in legal practice. It also addresses the power of the experts and critically examines forms of forensic fraud.
