Module description

The overall purpose of this module is to provide you with a sound foundation for understanding research and methodology in cross-cultural psychology and their implications for practice.

  • Introduction to Cross-Cultural Psychology, its aims and scope
  • Evaluation of cross-cultural research methods
  • Exploration of themes and issues in defining culture
  • Overview of culture, identity and development of self
  • Overview of culture and its effects on social interactions
  • Discussion of implications in psychology, education, clinical and business settings

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the influence of culture on human psychology
  • demonstrate an understanding of the development of ideas within this field, and of contemporary approaches and issues
  • recognise a range of research methods that might be appropriate to the study of this area of psychology (identifying strengths and weaknesses of core methodologies)
  • identify the ethical issues when conducting research in this area (with particular reference to harm)
  • strengthen sensitivity to cultural diversity in a variety of educational, clinical and business settings.
