Module description

This module focuses on your emerging creative writing and the significance of reading texts for the writer. Each of the ten sessions is divided into writing segments where you present a short story for the class to critique (these stories should be no longer than 4000 words in length but can be shorter). This is followed by a related critical segment where essential works of short fiction are given close textual readings from the point of view of style and construction.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will have:

  • developed to a professional level the craft of writing in the short story genre
  • developed confidence, sensitivity and discernment in your analysis of your own and your fellow students’ work
  • developed a greater critical understanding of contemporary literary developments
  • placed your own writing in the context of developments in contemporary fiction
  • developed to a professional level skill in editing of both your own and fellow students’ creative work
  • gained a greater practical knowledge and understanding of the markets for fiction.
